the story of
TEMPEROTA - FOR TESLA
When I bought a Pixel watch, I had the idea to control my car from the watch and went quickly to the Google Playstore to see the options. I found a few of them but they required me to use my account details and that was something I was not going to do easily, so I searched for more options... but all of them asked the same. That moment I decided to build my own... but then... I had no previous experience with Wear OS so I had to start reading. After a few weekends, I built Temperota and I was very happy with it.
Later, I was advised to make it available to the public for a fee, so I did it. Both free version and a paid version with extra functions.
Now let's answer some important questions:
Does Tesla have a smartwatch app?
No, but there are a few third party apps that you can use, like Temperota
Is it safe to use third party apps?
This is a longer discussion, not a yes/no answer. The main reason I built Temperota is because I didn't feel safe to give my Tesla credentials to anyone else. There are two types of credentials involved, the account credentials and the token.
The account credentials which most other apps ask for has access to anything, so that's a no go for me.
The token has only access to the car, it can see all the details of the car, including the location and it can be used to give commands to the car, like turn sentry off, unlock, start to drive, etc.
I wish most users were aware of the risks they take when using third party apps.
But your app Temperota is also a third party app!
Yes it is! The difference is that I chose security over comfort. So lets see the differences:
- Temperota doesn't ask for the account credentials, but it asks for the Tesla token, soon this will be the official way to do it!
- Temperota doesn't store the token/credentials on a server! The app saves the token on the smartwatch and its encrypted!
- Temperota doesn't use any other libraries (not even Firebase Analytics) that could leak the token. We want security!
Is Temperota available for Apple Watch too?
Not yet. I built Temperota for myself but then I decided to publish it. If I will have the time, I will have a look at building it for Apple Watches too.
What different functions does Temperota offer that the other apps don't?
Except being built with safety in mind, I built only the most useful functions as Temperota is not here to replace the Tesla phone app! Temperota is a standalone app, it only installs on the smartwatch, nothing on the phone! That means you can use your Tesla car without the need of a phone!
Another useful function that I use is to schedule the car to start the AC / heat the driver seat / heat the driving wheel at a desired hour. How is this different than the official Tesla phone app?
The need of a phone would be the first difference. The official Tesla app allows for only one scheduled precondition which I use for the morning, before I go to work. But what happens when I finish the work? I also want the car ready when I go home! And if I work in a cold or hot country, that would be very nice to have!
I'm not convinced yet, can I try Temperota before deciding?
Yes! There is always a free version that offers only the basic functions - Temperota Basic
Also, I give codes to get the app for free to whoever wants to try and test it.
Here are a few codes to get the app for free, enjoy!
